Calculations are presented for the isotope effects which arise in H2, HD and D2 evolution at Pt and Pd cathodes. It is shown that the quantities SD (separation factor) and R (exchange current density ratio) characterizing the kinetic isotope effects are related in a manner which can be a useful diagnostic indication of reaction mechanism. The method avoids a priori calculation of transition state force constants and hence the associated uncertainties of such calculations.
