Hydrogel with silver nanoparticles synthesized by Mimosa tenuiflora for second-degree burns treatment

Abstract: In this work we use Mimosa tenuiflora (MtE) extracts as reducing agents to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgMt NPs) which were characterized by DPPH and Total Polyphenols Assays, UV–visible, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). AgMt NPs possess average sizes of 21 nm and fcc crystalline structure, it was also confirmed that the MtE is present in the AgMt NPs even after the cleaning pr… Show more

“…The formulation could be uptaken selectively by macrophages and not by non‐phagocytic cells (i.e., fibroblasts), thus mitigating the systemic toxicity issue of Ag NPs rendering the system suitable for intracellular bacterial infections. Other methods to homogeneously impregnate Ag NPs to polymer matrices include direct reduction of AgNO 3 (i.e., by NaBH 4 , Niu et al, 2018) by other natural extracts as reducing agents (Jadhav et al, 2016; Martínez‐Higuera et al, 2021), peptides (Jo et al, 2014)), UV irradiation (Henríquez et al, 2014), direct blending of polymer matrices with sterically protected preformed Ag NPs (Jahan et al, 2019; Rolim et al, 2019) or via robust electrochemical (Nešović & Mišković‐Stanković, 2020) and even electrohydrodynamic routes (J. Yang et al, 2020).…”

“…Silver compounds have been used in medical fields for centuries, but silver's importance as a suitable treatment option has recently increased in applications against infections in cases of burns, open wounds, and chronic ulcers (6,41). However, it has recently been reported that silver compounds, which have serious cytotoxic activity against various host cells, may also delay the wound healing process (6,27,36). In addition to silver compounds such as silver sulfadiazine, widely used in burn treatment today, there are various newly developed compounds such as silver-coated nanoparticles (27,36,41).…”

In general, silver has both beneficial properties and harmful cytotoxic effects that raise concern.…”

“…For example, Jana et al used Carbopol gel with chitosan–egg albumin nanoparticles for transdermal delivery of aceclofenac [ 37 ]. Similarly, Martínez-Higuera et al formulated a Carbopol-based hydrogel as a matrix for the dispersion of Mimosa tenuifora extract and Ag nanoparticles to improve the healing of burn wounds and prevent infections [ 38 ]. Transdermal application of drugs has many advantages over oral and intravenous methods.…”
