Hydrogel Nanocomposite Adsorbents and Photocatalysts for Sustainable Water Purification

Abstract: Anthropogenic actions, environmental catastrophes, urbanization, population growth, and industrialization generate toxic pollutants in water bodies. The most pollutants are heavy metals and metalloids, dyes, volatile organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, radionuclides, aromatic hydrocarbons, oils, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microbes/pathogens, and microplastics that can be in different forms and concentrations. [3][4][5] Globally, approximately 2 million tons of pollutants from agriculture, in… Show more

“…Fabric industries eliminate large quantities of polluted wastewater that possess organic dyes . Coloring reagents are one of the recognized types of water pollutants that should be extracted from wastewater prior to release within aquatic techniques. Actually, a concentration of 1.0 mg/L provides sufficient coloration and can be unsuitable for consumption by human beings and also contaminate water bodies. There are vast concerns related to the contamination of water by dyes as a kind of organic contaminant due to their persistence and coloration results .…”

“…[1][2][3] Typically, they are hydrophilic, threedimensional (3D) networks constructed through physical or chemical crosslinking. Hydrogels have drawn tremendous attention of researchers owing to their widespread applications in biomedicine, [4][5][6] bionic smart material, [7,8] adsorption [9] and electrochemistry. [10] Even though, traditional hydrogels are still difficult to meet specially required functions in many cases.…”
