Hydrodynamic and Wave Responses During Storm Surges on the Southern Brazilian Coast: A Real-Time Forecast System

Abstract: Coastal flooding is a global phenomenon that results in severe economic losses, threatens lives, and impacts coastal communities worldwide. While recent developments in real-time flood forecasting systems provide crucial information to support coastal communities during coastal disasters, there remains a challenge to implement such systems in data-poor regions. This study demonstrates an operational real-time coupled surge wave guidance system for the coastal areas of Southern Brazil. This system is based on t… Show more

“…Storm 1 corresponds to the Tropical Storm Edouard near Bermuda at about 4,100 km away from Longyearbyen, occurring from 2020-07-04 to 2020-07-06(Pasch, 2021). Storm 2 possibly corresponds to the bomb cyclone in offshore south Brazil at about 13,000 km from Longyearbyen from 2020-06-30 to 2020-07-02 as reported inGobato and Heidari (2020) andKhalid et al (2020). According to weather news in Iceland( Ćirić, 2020), Storm 3 should correspond to an extratropical depression between Iceland and Greenland at about 34…”

“…Establishing the water levels through an analysis of the TC season's tide gauge data and utilising it to define unique water levels for three scenarios is another source of novelty in this study. For coastal inundation modelling, especially in the context of its applications to inform decision makers, hydrodynamic models are the most highly regarded [52][53][54]. One of the core inputs of these models is the tide gauge data, as they partially account for the observable hydrodynamics of waves and general water levels.…”
