Hybrid polarization-angle multiplexing for volume holography in gold nanoparticle-doped photopolymer

Abstract: We report on volume holographic hybrid polarization-angle multiplexing in a gold nanoparticle-doped photopolymer. When doping the gold nanoparticles, the linear photoinduced birefringence of the phenanthrenequinone-doped poly (methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) photopolymer could be increased by nearly 38%. The data pages could be recorded with the orthogonal circular polarization multiplexing, and the reconstructed images have a symbol-error rate of 3.81% and 4.46% for left circular polarization and right circula… Show more

“…In order to improve storage capacity and develop a commercial product, various multiplexing methods such as angle, shift, phase-code, and peristrophic multiplexing methods have been proposed and demonstrated [1,3]. In addition to the multiplexing methods, several recording medium [4,5,6,7], optical systems [8,9,10,11,12,13], recording techniques [14,15,16], and retrieving techniques [17,18,19] have been developed. Through the progress in supporting technologies, the recording density of more than 1 Tbit/in2 has been experimentally archived [20,21].…”

“…Photoinduced birefringence ∆n is one of the key parameters of polarization holographic material. For a PQ/PMMA material system, photoinduced birefringence is mainly caused by the structural rearrangements induced by the photochemical reaction of PQ molecules [18,23]. The photoinduced birefringence is given by (ignore the absorption) [24]:…”

“…For instance, 13 nm silica nanoparticles were added to the methacrylate photopolymers by Suzuki et al, and a noticeable reduction of scattering loss and a high-contrast refractive-index change were achieved [59]. A gold-nanoparticle-doped photopolymer was used to suppress side lobes of angle selectivity of volume holographic gratings by Cao et al, achieving a higher diffraction efficiency [60,61].…”
