Hybrid Long-Range Collision Avoidance for Crowd Simulation

Abstract: Abstract-Local collision avoidance algorithms in crowd simulation often ignore agents beyond a neighborhood of a certain size. This cutoff can result in sharp changes in trajectory when large groups of agents enter or exit these neighborhoods. In this work, we exploit the insight that exact collision avoidance is not necessary between agents at such large distances, and propose a novel algorithm for extending existing collision avoidance algorithms to perform approximate, long-range collision avoidance. Our fo… Show more

“…The basic procedures of a pedestrian experiment are as follows: a similar setting to real-world conditions based on the research objectives is set up; walking pedestrians are videotaped; the video footages are used for deriving macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. The advantage of the pedestrian experiment includes controllable circumstances and strong purpose-oriented setup (i.e., experimental settings are basic but fitted to the needs) [22][23]. Therefore, this study also used the pedestrian experiments to investigate the bidirectional conflict at the subway corridor.…”

“…For example, Guy et al [7] and Golas et al [6] calculated distant agent cluster information for each individual and incorporated it into an agent-based system. Haciomeroglu et al [10] proposed a method to determine the cluster information globally at once which is then used by each individual in the simulation to determine the possible distant collisions.…”

“…In continuum methods, agents are clustered, and the density and velocity field of each cluster is computed by accumulating the individual agents' positions and velocities [15], [18]. Treuille et al [34] used a global approach based on continuum theory for the flow of pedestrians.…”
