Hybrid Coordination Polymers—Metal Oxide Compounds with Chiral Structures

Abstract: Helical tubes, made up from four chains each of composition M(pzc)+ (M=Co, Ni), are present in compounds of Co or Ni ions coordinated by the ligand 2‐pyrazinecarboxylic acid (2‐pzc) and vanadium oxide chains. Compounds 1 and 2 have chiral structures and compound 3 contains equal numbers of left‐ and right‐handed helices.

“…To our knowledge, the decomposition temperature is the highest for any open-framework metal carboxylate. We attribute this exceptional stability to the 3D Ni-O-Ni framework [18] of the nickel succinate and to the strong coordination of d 8 Ni centers. The persistence of the parent phase past removal of coordinated water implies the formation of unsaturated metal sites in the dehydrated material.…”

“…The design and synthesis of NCS coordination networks have been developed by Rosseinsky et al, [89][90][91][92][93][94][95] Lin et al, [96][97][98][99][100][101][102] and others. [103][104][105][106][107] All of these researchers use various crystal engineering strategies to design NCS chiral frameworks. Rosseinsky et al created chiral frameworks based on the (10,3)-a network (see Figure 1.7).…”

“…Others who have synthesised chiral coordination networks include Jacobson et al, [103,104] Fe´rey et al, [105] Kim et al, [106] and zur Loye et al [107] Jacobson et al have synthesised several chiral compounds using chiral ligands, such as 2-pyrazinecarboxylate (2-pzc) and l-aspartate (l-Asp). With both ligands, new chiral compounds were synthesised, such as [Co 4 (2-pzc) 4 [103,104] With the latter, the first chiral compound with an extended transition metal-oxide-transition metal network was synthesised.…”

“…For example, many new molybdenum oxygen structures [141] have been generated with diamines playing a similar charge balancing and templating role as in aluminosilicate chemistry. Jacobson and coworkers have prepared several transition metal-vanadate hybrid materials [142] with open architectures and reversible hydration/dehydration [143]. However, for the later transition metals, such architectures are less likely due to the difficulty in maintaining high oxidation states in hydro/solvothermal reactions.…”
