Hybrid Choice Modeling of New Technologies for Car Choice in Canada

Abstract: In the past decade, a new trend in discrete choice modeling has emerged: psychological factors are explicitly incorporated to enhance the behavioral representation of the choice process. In this context, hybrid models expand on standard choice models by including attitudes and perceptions as latent variables. The complete model is composed of a group of structural equations describing the latent variables in terms of observable exogenous variables and a group of measurement relationships linking latent variabl… Show more

“…That is, the framework of HCM that has been developed to enrich the behavioral realism of DCM by accounting for latent factors such as perceptions and attitudes and employing more flexible error structures. The framework of the HCM has been applied in various transportation contexts, such as mode choice (Johansson et al 2006;Polydoropoulou et al 2013;, vehicle purchase (Bolduc et al 2008) and route choice (Tsirimpa and Polydoropoulou 2007).…”

“…The estimation of the fourth method was resolved both by classical methods (likelihood function) (Ben-Akivaet al, 2009;Bolduc et al, 2008) and Bayesian methods . However, the simultaneous model system is quite complex to solve.…”

“…Recently, car-choice studies have started to incorporate other aspects as well-mainly behavioral and attitudinal aspects of the purchasing household; some of these attributes imply that the car has some other values than purely functional. Typically, the attitudes to new technology are included when studying the uptake of alternative fuel vehicles, including hybrids and electric vehicles (Bolduc et al 2008;Eppstein et al 2011;Ewing and Sarigöllü 2000;Hidrue et al 2011). There is thus an implication that new technology can have a value for the consumer that is separated from the pure functional value of the car.…”
