Hyaluronic Acid–Povidone-Iodine Compound Facilitates Diabetic Wound Healing in a Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes Rodent Model

Abstract: Background: This study investigated whether a hyaluronic acid–povidone-iodine compound can enhance diabetic wound healing. Methods: A dorsal skin defect (6 × 5 cm) in a streptozotocin-induced diabetes rodent model was used. Seventy male Wistar rats were divided into seven groups: I, normal control; II, diabetic control, no treatment; III, diabetic rats, lower molecular weight (100 kDa) hyaluronic acid; IV, rats, higher molecular weight (1000 kDa) hyalur… Show more

“…Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent metabolic disease caused by impaired blood glucose control. DM affects approximately 350 million people worldwide, and the incidence of DM is still steadily increasing [1]. Diabetic wounds are one of the complications of DM; delayed wound healing in the lower extremities is prevalent in 15%-25% of DM patients [2,3].…”

“…The wounding operation was performed four weeks after the STZ injection of four-month-old male Wistar rats. Following former methods, rats received an intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared STZ (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, MO, USA) solution at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight [30,33]. A dorsal skin wounding defect with an area of 6 × 5 cm 2 involving entire skin excision below the level of the dorsal fascia was used as the wounding defect model [14].…”

“…Semiquantitative IHC staining was performed by using a horseradish peroxidasediaminobenzidine (HRP-DAB) staining kit (R&D Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA) following our previous publications [14,30]. Biopsy tissues were collected from the wound margin on days 3 and 10 following the final treatment of the ESWT group and at corresponding time points in the BIO and control groups.…”
