Hyalomatrix PA in Burn Care Practice

Abstract: Results of a national retrospective survey on Hyalomatrix PA in burn patients are reported.A total of 11 burn centers were contacted.A total of 57 patients were available. Hyalomatrix PA was used on young and adult patients, mainly in deep partial thickness and full thickness burns. In most cases, Hyalomatrix PA was applied immediately after the wound cleaning (wound debridement or escharectomy for adults, dermabrasion or debridement in young patients). After 7 days, reepithelization processes were more freque… Show more

“…No side effects on wounds and periwounds tissue were recorded in the present study. This finding is in according with the past literature in which no side effect and no allergic response were reported for the topical application of HA in wounds, both for dogs and human [ 8 , 9 , 22 , 37 , 38 ]. Hadley and colleagues histologically proved the absence of inflammatory reaction around the HA-based gel applied on their experimental wounds in dogs [ 9 ].…”

“…Thus, Hyalomatrix has been applied to young and adults, in deep partial and full thickness burns, either temporarily as wound coverage before grafting or alone for wound healing. [43] No adverse reactions have been reported. The study outcomes demonstrate that Hyalomatrix is good in safety profile, and effective as a skin regenerative matrix.…”

“…This has produced a development of biological substitutes that could repair or improve the function of tissue. The use of these products enlarges the spectrum of therapeutic resources available for the treatment of skin lesions, thereby changing the approach to many diseases [1]. The advent of so-called advanced wound care dressings has revolutionized the treatment of soft tissue loss, especially in burns and difficult wounds, e.g., pressure and vascular diabetic ulcers, to become an essential resource.…”

“…HA derivatives are available in several esterified forms, one of which is HYAFF ® (benzyl esters of hyaluronic acid), a biopolymer organized in a three-dimensional scaffold that allows fibroblast colonization producing an ordered reconstruction of dermal tissue [11]. One of these recent HA derivatives is a dermal substitute composed by HYAFF, used in burn care practice as biological regenerative matrix on both deep partial-thickness and full-thickness burns and as temporary coverage of the wounds [1, 12]. We have looked at the efficacy of this substitute, originally developed for dermal regeneration in different full-thickness wounds, for cases of limb trauma with exposed bone or tendon which continue to be challenging problems for plastic surgeons.…”
