Vehicle interior noise is an important factor affecting ride comfort. To reduce the noise inside the vehicle at the vehicle body design stage, a finite element model of the vehicle body must be established. While taking the first-order global modal of the body-in-white, the maximum sound pressure level of the target point in the vehicle, the body mass, and the side impact conditions into account, the thickness of the body panel as determined via sensitivity analysis is treated as the input variable, and the sample is determined by following the Hamersley experimental design. Specifically, the Elman neural network predicts the noise value in the vehicle, and a vehicle body structure optimization method that comprehensively considers NVH performance and side impact safety is established. The prediction errors of the Elman neural network algorithm were within 3%, which meets the prediction accuracy requirements. To achieve satisfactory restraint performance, the maximum sound pressure level of the target point in the vehicle is reduced by 5.92 dB, and the maximum intrusions of the two points on the B-pillar inner panel are reduced by 31.1 mm and 33.71 mm, respectively. The side impact performance is improved while the noise inside the vehicle is reduced. This study provides a reference method for multidisciplinary research aiming to optimize the design of vehicle body structures.

In ships, aerodynamic noise from the variable-air-volume fan is a common problem. This study experimentally explores the strategy of reshaping the traditional C-shaped channel structure to an L-shape to reduce noise. The noise level and resistance coefficient of the improved air distributor are analysed, and the results show that the noise of the original air distributor is 56.3 dB(A) under the rated working conditions (static pressure of 800 Pa and flow rate of 350 m3/h), which exceeds the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) ship noise limit (55 dB(A)). For the improved air distributor, the noise pressure level is 38.5 dB(A), the sound pressure level of high-frequency noise is reduced by 48% and the peak sound pressure level appears at 125 to 250 Hz, a frequency below the threshold of human hearing. Thus, the reshaping of the channel has a significant noise reduction effect. When the static pressure is 400 Pa and the flow rate is 100 to 500 m3/h, the sound pressure level of the improved air distributor is reduced by 29.9% to 32.2% to become less than 55 dB(A). Thus, the sound pressure level at the outlet of the improved air distributor meets the IMO ship noise standard.

The automotive heating and ventilating air condition (HVAC) system, when vibrating, can generate various types of noises such as humming, hissing, clicking and air-rushes. These noises can be characterised to determine their root causes. In this study, the humming-type noise is taken into consideration whereby the noise and vibration characteristics are measured from various HVAC components such as power steering pump, compressor and air conditional pipe. Four types of measurement sensors were used in this study - tachometer for rpm tracking; accelerometer for the vibration microphone for the noise; and sound camera for the visualization measurement. Two types of operating conditions were taken into consideration - they were “idle” (850 rpm) and “running” (850-1400 rpm) conditions. A constant blower speed was applied for both conditions. The result shows that the humming noises can be determined at the frequency range of 300-350 Hz and 150-250 Hz for both idle and running conditions, respectively. The vibration of the power steering pump shows the worst acceleration of 1.8 m/s2 at the frequency range of 150-250 Hz, compared to the compressor and air conditional pipe. This result was validated with the 3D colour order and sound camera analyses, in which the humming noise colour mapping shows dominance in this frequency range.
