Human T‐cell lymphotropic virus type‐1 infection and risk of cancer: 15.4 year longitudinal study among atomic bomb survivors in Nagasaki, Japan

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between human T-lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) infection and cancer risk in a longitudinal study. “…to estimate the incidence of breast cancer among HTLV-1 infected population of old women with habits of prolonged breast-feeding. In the second publication [53] the authors examined the development of different kinds of cancers, including breast cancer, in HTLV-1 infected Japanese population. However, these authors did not focus on old women with habits of prolonged breast-feeding.…”

“…HTLV-1 is a retrovirus that causes ATL, an aggressive form of T-cell malignancy (Arisawa et al, 2006). HTLV-1 is transmitted from mother to infant via breast milk and is known to be prevalent in several specific areas in the world, including Southwestern Japan (Arisawa et al, 2006). It was estimated that there were 10-20 millions HTLV-1 infected individuals in the world (de The and Bomford, 1993).…”

“…22,26 So, it is worthwhile to study possible benefits of TPA treatment as preventive against ovarian or mammary tumors development. However, on the other hand TPA strongly stimulated the expression of genes controlled by ERE sequences which part of them are responsible for enhanced replication of the cells 65 and as consequences of that these cells may acquire high excess of mutations which might lead to tumors development. These results are in agreement with previous studies which showed that treatment with TPA increased pS2 mRNA expression more dramatically than the stimulation by E2.…”
