Human Rotavirus Vaccine RIX4414 (Rotarix™) Is Highly Efficacious in Infants from Asia During the First Two Years of Life

Abstract: and H2) were recognized from MV cases during 1992-2007. Viruses of genotype H1 and D3 are implicated as indigenous strains in Taiwan. In Taiwan, one-dose measles immunization program began in 1978, and two-dose policy started in 1984. Two catch-up campaigns were implemented in 1992-1994 and 2002-2004 separately. The vaccine coverage rate with 1st dose MV (for 12-15 months) and 2nd dose MMR (for 6 years old) was over 90% and 95% since 1996. The multiple genotypes and sporadic cases discovered after 2003 (exce… Show more

“…115 Recently, three additional phase III trials provided preliminary data published in abstract form and their results are also summarized in Table 4. [116][117][118] The first of these was conducted in 6-17 week old infants from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, 116 where during the next 2 years HRV reduced severe gastroenteritis and hospital admission rates from rotavirus by 96% and 94% respectively, a finding comparable to results in European infants. 115 Similarly, HRV co-administered with other routine vaccines including oral polio vaccine (OPV), to 6-12 week old infants in Latin America 117 and 2-11 week old infants in Soweto 118 reduced severe rotavirus disease by 82-83% during the first year of life, a level of efficacy that was comparable to the original large phase III trial conducted predominantly in Latin America and where OPV was given separately.…”

“…In a recent vaccine trial with RV1, Phua et al found that this rotavirus vaccine is highly efficacious in 6-17-week-old infants from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan [25]. After a 20-month follow-up period, vaccine efficacy rates were 96% (95% CI: 85-100) against severe RVGE and 94% (95% CI: 81-99) against RVGE-related hospitalizations.…”

“…12 Two oral doses of RIX4414 vaccine were found to be efficacious with no safety concerns in studies conducted across Latin America, Europe and Asia. 11,[13][14][15] In addition to providing protection against the G1 RV type, RIX4414 aim: The lyophilized form of the human rotavirus RIX4414 vaccine (Rotarix TM ) is usually reconstituted with a liquid calcium carbonate (cacO 3 ) buffer and administered orally. However, errors in the reconstitution could occur (e.g.…”
