Human Reliability Analysis for Visual Inspection in Aviation Maintenance by a Bayesian Network Approach

Abstract: Visual inspection plays an important role in aviation maintenance. Human reliability analysis (HRA) in this field is necessary and can bring benefits to better human error management. Because of the lack of safety data, the present paper aims to introduce the Bayesian network (BN) approach to perform HRA in visual inspection, which permits the utilization of multi-disciplinary sources of objective and subjective information. In this paper, significant influence factors of visual inspection are identified accor… Show more

“…The BN modeling process and application in the field of aviation safety (especially about inspection and aviation maintenance) have been discussed in the authors’ previous studies [ 13 , 14 ]. Nevertheless, only two states are set for most nodes in the network due to the limitations of the noisy OR gates and the recursive noisy OR rule, which are used to generate CPTs (Conditional Probability Table).…”

“…Such a trend shows that although the probability-based risk theories truly have initial effects on risk reduction, their component failure-based vision still has embedded roots in static and linear safety philosophy, and can hardly address accident causality involving interactive complexity. Facing this, other researchers in this field have made efforts to develop extensive techniques to investigate human reliability factors such as Petri nets, the dynamic Bayesian network, and statecharts [8][9][10]. However, these methods can not address the dynamic processes of risk transferring, especially in human and organizational levels.…”
