Human Metapneumovirus and Human Bocavirus in Children

Abstract: Several new viruses have recently been described in children, including human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and human bocavirus (HBoV). hMPV has been established as a common cause of upper and lower respiratory tract infections in children, often second only to respiratory syncytial virus as a cause of bronchiolitis in infants. Diagnostic tools have been developed for the clinician and effective treatment and prevention strategies are being investigated. HBoV was more recently identified. Although it was initially id… Show more

“…[19][20][21][22] However, because it is so frequently detected in asymptomatic individuals (15%), the etiological role of rhinovirus continues to be questioned, although it could be an indication of real, subclinical infections. 23 Recently identified pathogens, such as metapneumovirus and human bocavirus, [24][25][26][27] are less commonly encountered. Although the prevalence of viral pneumonia caused by adenovirus is low (2%-12%), it must be identified, as it can lead to necrotizing pneumonia.…”

“…The age and domiciliary status (peri-urban or rural) of each patient was recorded in order to assess the distribution of these viruses in different age groups and different domiciles. Previous studies in different countries have focused on the involvement of both hMPV and HBoV in respiratory tract infections in children [12][13][14][15] and in immunocompromised adults [16].…”
