Abstract. The Bayanbulak Grassland, Tianshan, P. R. China, is located in an intramontane sedimentary basin where meandering and braided gravel-bed rivers coexist under the same climatic and geological settings. We report and compare measurements of the discharge, width, depth, slope and grain size of individual threads from these braided and meandering rivers. Both types of threads share statistically indistinguishable regime relations. Their depths and slopes compare well with the threshold theory, but they are wider than predicted by this theory. These findings are reminiscent of previous observations from similar gravel-bed rivers. Using the scaling laws of the threshold theory, we detrend our data with respect to discharge to produce a homogeneous statistical ensemble of width, depth and slope measurements. The statistical distributions of these dimensionless quantities are similar for braided and meandering threads. This suggests that a braided river is a collection of intertwined threads, which individually resemble those of meandering rivers. Given the environmental conditions in Bayanbulak, we furthermore hypothesize that bedload transport causes the threads to be wider than predicted by the threshold theory.

The spatial characteristics of land cover are useful for understanding the various impacts of human activity on the overall ecological conditions of the urban environment. The multi-temporal Landsat images (TM) between the years of 1990 and 2003 were used together with the Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to evaluate the environmental changes in the area around Gabal El Hamza and the surrounding urban expansion in the new urban cities at the northeast side of the Greater Cairo by using the post classification change detection technique and field investigation. Five major units were determined including: urban, cultivated land, Holocene sand dunes, Oligocene basalt and Miocene-Pleistocene sediments. The cultivated cover changed from 89.6 to 150.4 km 2 for the years of 1990 and 2003 respectively. The urban area increased from 49.5 to 120.9 km 2 with a great value of change reached 71.3 km 2 . The basaltic exposures changed from 3 to 3.75 km 2 . The sandy cover decreased from 68.9 to 60.1 km 2 and the exposures of the rock units changed from 904.8 to 780.8 km 2 with removing 124 km 2 in 13 years. The total accuracy of the Landsat-derived land cover data was 95 and 92% for the years 1990 and 2003 respectively. Landsat TM thermal infrared data indicated that the surface temperature was strongly affected by the land cover changes.

Several regions around the world are currently under rapid, wide-ranging changes of land cover. Satellite remote sensing techniques have proven to be cost efficient in extensive land cover changes. This study illustrates the effect of land use/cover change in Neka river of Iran using topographic maps and multi-temporal remotely sensed data from 1975 to 2001. The Maximum likelihood supervised classification technique was used to extract information from satellite data, and post-classification change detection method was employed to detect land use/cover change. Post-classification change detection technique was used to produce an image through cross-tabulation. Changes among different land use/cover classes were assessed. The overall accuracy of land cover change maps, generated from Landsat data 1975 and 2001, ranged from 99.44% and 97.08% with Kappa statistics of 85% and 83%, respectively. The analysis indicated that the urban and agricultural land expansion of Neka river was increased resulted in the considerable reduction of forest area. The maps showed that between 1987 and 2001 the agricultural land and built-up areas increased approximately 59.86km 2 (9.16%) and 7.35(1.13%), respectively. While forest decreased 67.91 km 2 (10.29%). The study quantified the patterns of land use/cover change for the last 13 years for Neka river that forms valuable resources for urban planners and decision makers to devise sustainable land use and environmental planning.
