Manufacturing is a human-driven process that applies energy and manpower to produce consumer goods. In repetitive task processes like manufacturing systems, optimal performance is extremely important for the production employee and the company.In the general fast pace of manufacturing operations, there is the potential for operator errors, which correlates to possible safety issues and loss of revenue. This research explores the influence of cognitive resources on operator performance in manufacturing operations using the Multiple Resource Theory (MRT) and mental workload measures. Computer simulation models and mathematical modeling with Improved PerformanceResearch Integration Tool (IMPRINT) were used to assess mental workload resources to improve human system design for performance of the shop floor employee. This research presents the design, analysis and experimental implementation of a theoretical framework that provides a systematic approach for measuring mental workload using a combination of analytical and empirical techniques. Two experiments are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed framework. As manufacturing operations become more complex, models can be used to provide recommendations for operator mental workload capacity planning. Therefore, this work is important to industry as manufacturing operations are changing by requiring more complex procedures, which increases the cognitive demand of the operator.iii

Digitization of the Work Environment for Sustainable Production

Many production processes are changing towards hybrid CPPS, in which humans work together with intelligent as well as automated or autonomously acting systems. This enables economic advantages through more efficient processes, error reduction, and quality improvements. It further contributes to a sustainable production, which preserves resources and enhances operators' well-being. To achieve these advantages, an adequate system design is required. Here, various design approaches are available, such as the creation of active involvement of people and adequate situational awareness, and the consideration of both operators and automation as equal and independent actors. But how do they affect its performance and the operators in detail to achieve both economic and human-centered goals? We present the results of a first literature review on the interaction of humans and autonomous systems in production systems and the associated allocation of work (Human Autonomy Teaming, HAT) and open research problems, respectively. Finally, we propose and discuss preliminary ideas and starting points to solve these design issues as a basis for future research work.

Sustainability is gaining importance and the economy is changing into a circular economy, especially with regard to climate change and the need to create more resilient value chains. The organization of work is meeting these challenges with, among other things, the digitalization of increasingly changeable production. Collecting and understanding data is becoming increasingly complex, as not only internal production data is of interest, but also cross-company sustainability indicators play a role in decision-making. The research results presented under the main topic “Digitization of the work environment for sustainable production” address this problem of compliance with sustainability requirements by means of digitization and its impact on the workplace and workers. The members of the Scientific Society for Work and Business Organisation (WGAB) present innovative concepts and research results for practitioners and scientists and thus provide valuable input for current challenges.
