PurposeThe exponential growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, coupled with advanced algorithms and increased computational capacity, has facilitated their widespread adoption in various industries. Among these, the financial technology (FinTech) sector has been significantly impacted by AI-based decision-making systems. Nevertheless, a knowledge gap remains regarding the intricate mechanisms behind the micro-decision-making process employed by AI algorithms. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned issue.Design/methodology/approachThis research utilized a sequential mixed-methods research approach and obtained data through 18 interviews conducted with a single FinTech firm in France, as well as 148 e-surveys administered to participants employed at different FinTechs located throughout Europe.FindingsThree main themes (ambidexterity, data sovereignty and model explainability) emerge as underpinnings for effective AI micro decision-making in FinTechs.Practical implicationsThis research aims to minimize ambiguity by putting forth a proposition for a model that functions as an “infrastructural” layer, providing a more comprehensive illumination of the micro-decisions made by AI.Originality/valueThis research pioneers as the very first empirical exploration delving into the essential factors that underpin effective AI micro-decisions in FinTechs.

The emergence of Industry 5.0 took place in the mid-2010s, presenting a novel vision for the future of an industry that places emphasis on human involvement in the production process. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a substantial surge in the popularity of this concept, gaining traction not only in the business realm but also within academic circles. This increased attention can be attributed to a heightened focus on crucial aspects such as sustainability and resilience. The objective of this study is to present an updated overview of key bibliometric trends in Industry 5.0 research. The findings indicate a remarkable expansion of research activities in the field of Industry 5.0, as evidenced by a substantial increase in the number of publications and citations. Concurrently, the growth of Industry 5.0 research has led to the emergence of diverse perspectives and the exploration of related research themes such as artificial intelligence, big data, and human factors. In summary, this study enhances our understanding of the Industry 5.0 concept by providing an updated overview of the current state of research in this area and suggesting potential avenues for future investigations.

Industry 5.0 (I5.0) is all set to come into the limelight when Industry 4.0 (I4.0) has not yet fully matured and still gaining ground in growing economies. The general notion of I5.0 is discussed in the existing literature on the subject domain, but there are no adequate studies in the literature that examine its implications. Therefore, systematic literature review method is adopted to: explore the understanding of I5.0; identify the opportunities for I5.0; highlight the challenges in I5.0 implementation; investigate the effects of I5.0 on economic, environmental, and social pillars of sustainability; and propose a framework for effective implementation of I5.0 concept in manufacturing enterprises. This article aims to stand on an unbiased assessment to ascertain the landscape occupied by I5.0 and the results of the comprehensive review offer insightful conclusions. I5.0 represents a paradigm shift that emphasizes the integration of advanced technologies with human‐centric approaches. This paper critically analyzes the key pillars and highlights the potential to enhance sustainability in manufacturing. Furthermore, the implications of I5.0 for sustainable manufacturing practices are explored. The paper also investigates its potential to address environmental concerns and promote eco‐friendly manufacturing practices. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, industry leaders, and technology providers in implementing sustainable manufacturing practices on their I5.0 journey. In addition, the proposed I5.0 framework will serve as a basis for further investigations on how to apply the concept of I5.0 in other sectors.
