Human-biting activities of Anopheles species in south-central Ethiopia

Abstract: BackgroundIndoor residual spraying (IRS) and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the key malaria vector control interventions in Ethiopia. The success of these interventions rely on their efficacy to repel or kill indoor feeding and resting mosquitoes. This study was undertaken to monitor human-biting patterns of Anopheles species in south-central Ethiopia.MethodsHuman-biting patterns of anophelines were monitored for 40 nights in three houses using human landing catches (HLC) both indoors and outdoors … Show more

“…Such results have been reported by other studies [14,22,29], where males in this age groups are more susceptibility to malaria infections. In this rural area, males in the reproductive age groups (≥15 years old) are commonly breadwinners of their families, spending most of their time especially evenings outdoors when the peak biting activity of the infective mosquito is observed [30]. Importantly, the observed lower prevalence of malaria in children under 5 years of age might be because of their less likely exposure to infected mosquito bite due to good awareness and practices of their parents/care takers on malaria control and prevention activities.…”

“…This mosquito sampling method calibration study was conducted simultaneously with monitoring of human-biting activities of local Anopheles species by HLC alone [30]. The experiment was conducted for 39 nights in a 3 × 3 Latin square randomized design replicated 13 times (cycles) in the period between July and November 2014 (Fig.…”

“…early, late or "central" night activity) has been reported in An. arabiensis after control interventions [56,[84][85][86][87][88]. According to theoretical predictions, lack of biting time peak is indicative of a situation in which the selective pressure exerted by LLIN has altered the typical biting pattern, but has not been yet sufficient to trigger a strong shift towards earlier and later biting times ( Fig.…”
