Objectives The prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) among the general population worldwide is 20%. This study aims to discover any correlations between RAS predisposing factors and the gender and year of study of undergraduate dental students at the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Airlangga University. Methods A cross-sectional analytical study using simple random sampling was performed. The respondents answered seven questions on a self-reported online questionnaire set up using Google Forms. Chi-square analyses were conducted to determine any correlation between RAS predisposing factors and the gender and year of study of the students. Results The highest predisposing factors for RAS in undergraduate dental students were local trauma (77.7%) followed by stress (71.3%) and nutritional deficiencies (41.5%). Stress correlated strongly with the year of study (p = 0.015). There was no correlation between gender and RAS predisposing factors (p > 0.05). Conclusion There was a correlation between stress, one of the predisposing factors for RAS, and the year of study, but there was no correlation between gender and RAS predisposing factors including local trauma, stress, nutritional deficiency, genetics, allergies, and systemic diseases.

Background: Oral and dental diseases experienced by Indonesians is recurrent apthous stomatitis with a national prevalence of 8.0%. Stress can afflict children, adolescents, adults and the elderly even in a school environment, so stress can happen to anyone, anywhere. People who experience stress result in decreased concentration ability, deteriorating health, depression and sleep disorders and even dental and oral health problems, one of which is recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Objective: To determine the relationship between academic stress and the incidence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Methodology: this type of analytic observational study with cross sectional design. The research was conducted on students of the Department of Dental Health, Jakarta Health Polytechnic I. Collecting data using an observation sheet for the incidence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis and a questionnaire to determine the level of academic stress. Data analysis using Chi-Square. Results: it was found that academic stress on the incidence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis showed the p-value was 0.047 (p <0.05). Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (SAR) is an oral disease characterized by recurrent ulcers limited to the oral mucosa without other systemic disorders in the patient. SAR can create discomfort and disturbance, especially when performing the functions of mastication, swallowing, and speech. There are predisposing factors that trigger RAS, one of which is stress. This study aimed to determine the relationship between stress levels and the incidence of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (SAR) in undergraduate students at Mulawarman University. This research is a cross-sectional study with a purposive sampling technique. The sample was 380 Mulawarman university students. The data analyses used were univariate and bivariate analyses with a chi square test. The results showed that 82% of students (311 students) were in the moderate category, and 61% (231 students) did not experience RAS. The chi-square test showed no significant relationship between mild and moderate stress levels and moderate and severe stress on SAR. There was a significant relationship between mild and severe stress levels on SAR, where students with mild stress levels tended not to experience SAR 1.731 times compared to students with severe stress. There was a relationship between stress levels and recurrent aphthous stomatitis in Mulawarman University students.
