Case-based Learning Video and Learning Motivation among Midwifery Students

Case-based learning is commonly used in various settings, including the medical field. This study aims to determine the effect of case-based learning video on learning motivation among midwifery students. This was a quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test approach. This study was conducted at the Bachelor of midwifery study program, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University from August to October 2021. Forty-nine student midwives were selected through total sampling technique. Demographic information and motivation data were collected using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Descriptive statistics, ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis test, and Paired T-Test/Wilcoxon Rank-sum test were applied to analyze the data. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. This study reported no significant differences between age and the MSLQ value components. Nonetheless, significant differences were found between parents' income with intrinsic motivation (p equals 0.012), task value (p equals 0.044), and self-efficacy (p equals 0.02). Furthermore, there was a significant difference between intrinsic motivation and residence (p equals 0.012) among the other value components. The mean scores for all value components of motivation increased after the case-based learning video intervention. Two value components (task value and efficacy) showed a significant difference (p-value 0.026 and 0.000). In conclusion, case-based learning video effectively improved motivation among students. Such finding is essential to developing suitable learning method for students.

One of the factors that influence the success of an undergraduate student is learning motivation. Students are required to learn and develop themselves independently and actively find the source of knowledge, not just getting knowledge from the lecturers alone. One type of motivation is intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation can be in the form of satisfaction in undergoing learning and gaining knowledge, the existence of appreciation of the achievements achieved, and the existence of life goals to be achieved. Thus it is necessary to do research to predict student learning performance by considering the intrinsic motivation of students. Primary data was obtained from the motivational questionnaire of 100 students, while secondary data includes attendance data, quiz data, assignments, mid-term exam, and final exam. Furthermore, the two types of data are combined. The first stage uses the Logistics Regression Algorithm, Support Vector Classifier, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Gaussian NaÃ¯ve Bayes, and K-Nearest Neighbors. The quality of the algorithm is measured using the level of accuracy. Cross validation test with 5 K-Fold was carried out, and the Decision Tree algorithm was obtained with the highest yield of 0.898051. The second stage is to do a tuning hyperparameter using a Grid Search and obtained a value of 0.927206. The third stage is to predict data test as much as 21 data and obtained accuracy of 0.904761.

Background: Low achievement is one of the problems in higher education. Many factors that can cause student failure or low student achievement such as motivation, time management, learning strategy, socioeconomic, family, environment, presence, and student’s interest. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting low academic achievement of undegraduate medical students in the Medical Faculty of Lampung University.Methods: The study method was qualitative study with phenomenological approach and data was collected with a semi-structured interview. This study was conducted in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Lampung, in 2017. The study population was students in the first year, second year, and third year. Sample taken with purposive sampling obtained 17 students. Inclusion criteria: students who achieved Grade Point Average (GPA) < 2 and who participated in this study. Data was analysed by using thematic analysis.Results: The number of respondents was 7 male students and 10 female students. The low achievement was caused by a lack of learning strategy, lack of motivation, psychological problems, family problems, and health problems.Conclusion: The factors affecting low achievement were lack of learning strategy, lack of motivation, psychological problems, family problems, and health.
