Huang-Lian-Jie-Du-Decoction Ameliorates Hyperglycemia and Insulin Resistant in Association With Gut Microbiota Modulation

Abstract: Background: Huang-Lian-Jie-Du-Decoction (HLJDD), a prescription of traditional Chinese medicine, has been clinically used to treat diabetes for thousands of years and its mechanism was reported to be related to gut microbiota. However, no study has explored the effect of HLJDD on the gut microbiota in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) yet. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the modulation of gut microbiota induced by HLJDD treatment in T2DM in order to unveil the underlying mechanism. Methods: A combinatio… Show more

“…On the other hand, the three HFD groups had lower levels of some SCFAs‐producing bacteria, such as Blautia , Butyrivibrio , and Ruminococcaceae_UCG‐010 . In addition, Akkermansia , which is known as maintaining the integrity of intestinal mucosal function, was decreased in the three HFD groups, and this was consistent with Akkemansia enriched in the ZT12CON by LEfSe analysis. Therefore, either at ZT0 or at ZT12, the intake of FO or AO selectively enhanced the populations of several beneficial genera.…”

“…Component crude drugs of BTS, Atractylodis Rhizoma and Rhei Rhizoma, which are reported to augment the genus Akkermansia in the gut [51,52], are known to include bioactive glycosides atractylodis and sennoside, respectively. Chen et al reported that the genus Akkermansia was increased by administration of another Kampo drug, orengedokuto, in a high-fat diet and streptozotocin induced type 2 diabetic model rat [53]. Gardeniae Fructus and Scutellariae Radix are common crude drugs in both orengedokuto and BTS.…”
