HPV genotyping in neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterine cervix in northern Thailand

Abstract: HPV18 infection was predominant in cervical NECA. Variations in HPV genotype may be related to the clinicopathologic features and pathogenetic pathways of NECA. Vaccination against HPV16 and HPV18 might provide protection against cervical NECA in almost 90% of cases.

“…The high prevalence of HR-HPV infection among Thai women with ICC also has been consistently reported across the regions ranging from 77% to 97% (Tungsinmunkong et al, 2006;Siriaunkgul et al, 2008;Siriaunkgul et al, 2011;Chinchai et al, 2012;Natphopsuk et al, 2013;Siriaunkgul et al, 2013;Aromseree et al, 2014). In addition, more than 60% of ICC was HPV 16 and/or 18-related supporting that the majority of ICC in all regions is associated with HPV16 and/or 18.…”

“…In addition, more than 60% of ICC was HPV 16 and/or 18-related supporting that the majority of ICC in all regions is associated with HPV16 and/or 18. Multiple HPV infection in Thai women varied widely from approximately 6% to 20% depending on histologic subtypes of ICC (Table 4) (Siriaunkgul et al, 2008;Siriaunkgul et al, 2011;Chinchai et al, 2012;Natphopsuk et al, 2013;Siriaunkgul et al, 2013).…”

“…The cases of cervical NECA diagnosed between 2003-2009, which were known to be HPV18-positive in a previous PCR study (Siriaunkgul et al, 2011), were retrieved. The diagnosis of NECA was based on the standard morphologic criteria by a consensus agreement of 4 pathologists (S.S., S.K., J.S, and K.S.…”

“…DNA extraction from paraffin-embedded tissue was performed based on previously described methods (Siriaunkgul et al, 2011). Quantiative PCR (qPCR) for HPV18 quantitation was carried out using TaqMan chemistry on the ABI PRISM 7500 Sequence Detection System instrument.…”
