ABSTRACT:Cancer is a fatal disease and cancer incidence is increasing from day to day. Thus, anticancer drugs are widely used and their analysis requires simple and effective analytical procedures. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is a promising technique for drug analysis as a simple and versatile technique with low cost of analysis, minimal sample clean-up and high sample loading capacity. An extensive literature survey has been done and TLC techniques used for the analysis of anticancer agents in different matrices have been presented.

Nothapodytes nimmoniana (J. Graham) Mabb., commonly known as Narkya, holds immense potential as a medicinal plant, exhibiting a wide array of pharmacological activities. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the methods used for extracting bioactive compounds from different plant parts, along with an exploration of their diverse pharmacological activities. The plant’s significance stems from its high content of camptothecin (CPT), a potent anti-cancer alkaloid. We delve into the plant’s anti-microbial, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-helminthic, anti-malarial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, we highlight the challenges faced by N. nimmoniana (J. Graham) Mabb., due to overexploitation and its endangered status. To address these concerns, the review underscores the importance of sustainable conservation strategies and the implementation of advanced techniques like plant tissue culture and endophyte production for increased CPT production. This holistic analysis not only sheds light on the plant’s multifaceted benefits but also underscores the need for responsible utilization and conservation efforts.

Nothapodytes nimmoniana is an important anticancer medicinal plant which possesses various bioactive substances, of which camptothecin (CPT) is the most important. CPT is mainly obtained by extraction from plants. However, extraction is problematic because of the lack of reference information, which leads to a large number of trees being felled. In this study, CPT was detected in different parts (shoots, two- and three-year-old stems, tender leaves, mature leaves, senescent leaves, roots and bark) of N. nimmoniana. A high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was used to determine the CPT content. All parts analyzed contained CPT, but concentrations depended on the different growth phases of the stems and leaves. The highest CPT content was 1.87 mg/g from roots, followed by the shoots, with a content of 1.07 mg/g. With a view to resource utilization, we concluded that the shoots were the best tissues for exploitation. Suggestions for shoot picking are also provided.
