Camptothecin Distribution and Content in Nothapodytes nimmoniana

Abstract: Nothapodytes nimmoniana is an important anticancer medicinal plant which possesses various bioactive substances, of which camptothecin (CPT) is the most important. CPT is mainly obtained by extraction from plants. However, extraction is problematic because of the lack of reference information, which leads to a large number of trees being felled. In this study, CPT was detected in different parts (shoots, two- and three-year-old stems, tender leaves, mature leaves, senescent leaves, roots and bark) of N. nimmon… Show more

“…Nothapodytes pittosporoides is a traditional Chinese herbal medicinal and recently was found to contain camptothecin (Pan et al, 2010). It belongs to the same genus of N. foetida or N. nimmoniana that contains camptothecin in all organs, with the highest content in roots (Mingzhang et al, 2011). All the materials were dried in an oven at 60 C for 6 h and were ground.…”

“…Quantification of CPT content from Nothapodytes nimmoniana by different analytical methods like high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [14] and high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) [15,16]. Desorption electro spray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) [17,18] and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR) [19,20] methods have been reported. Normally, CPT was determined and validated by HPLC and RP-HPLC [21,22] which was costly and consume ample of time; on the other hand, UV method is…”

“…In previous studies, efforts were made in evaluating CPT yield from other natural sources of the alkaloid for the development of an in vitro production system to mitigate exploitation of natural sources [11][12][13][14]. However, such studies are few in the in vitro cultures of C. fragrans.…”
