The effort of this work was to prove whether there exists any relation between stress factors caused by content of cadmium and zinc, and content and composition of opium alkaloids codeine, morphine, narcotine (noscapine) and papaverine contained in poppy seeds and capsules (Papaver somniferum L.) in 14 samples of 8 varieties cultivated in 8 localities in 2003. Contents of cadmium and zinc were measured by a method of electrothermic atomization and contents of selected individual alkaloids were determined by a HPLC method. The results were tested by the Spearman correlation coefficient and the Pearson linear correlation coefficient. With knowledge of the Spearman coefficient, positive relations narcotine -zinc and narcotine -cadmium in the poppy seed samples were found. In the samples of poppy capsules positive relation morphine -cadmium (in cv. Opal) and negative relation papaverine -zinc and codeine -zinc (in cv. Opal) were found. Those pairs have been tested by the Pearson correlation coefficient for a possibility to exclude the linear independency. This independency was excluded with the probability of over 95% in the relations narcotine -cadmium in the seeds and morphine -cadmium in the capsules. With the probability of over 97.5%, linear relations narcotine -zinc in seeds and papaverine -zinc in capsules were proved.

Leaf-cutting ants, Acromyrmex octospinosus (Reich), are considering among the most important pest species of the New World. Until now, the main insecticides used for controlling these ants were synthetic chemicals. Leaf-cutting ants live in obligate symbiosis with abasidiomycete fungus, Leucocoprinus gongylophorus (Heim) Moeller. The crucial role of this symbiotic partner in the nest of leaf-cutting ants has prompted us to focus on A. octospinosus management through the use of fungicides in our study. Five parts of plants identified for their antifungal potential through TRAMIL ethnopharmacological surveys were tested: 1) bulbs of Allium cepa L.; 2) seed pods of Allium sativum L.; 3) green fruits of Lycopersicon esculentum L.; 4) leaves of Manihot esculenta Crantz; and 5) leaves of Senna alata (L.) Roxburgh. One plant extract with strong fungicidal activity (S. alata) against L. gongylophorus was found. The other extracts had lesser fungistatic or fungicidal effects depending on the concentrations used. The data presented in this study showed that TRAMILs fungicidal plant extracts have potential to control the symbiotic fungus of leaf cutting ants, in particular a foliage extract of S. alata.

Alleviation of pain is a major objective in medicine to increase the quality of life. Analgesics are agents that relieve pain by elevating the pain threshold without disturbing consciousness or altering other sensory modalities. Opium is an isoquinoline alkaloid obtained from poppy plant Papaver somniferum (Papaveraceae). Codeine is an alkaloid prepared from opium or morphine by methylation. Codeine is used as a central analgesic, sedative, hypontic, antinonciceptive, antiperistaltic, and is also recommended in tuberculosis and insomnia due to incessant coughing. The literature information relate mostly to the determination of codeine active components using Gas chromatography (GC), Capillary electrophoresis, Thin layer chromatography, High-performance thin layer chromatography, UV–Vis Spectrophotometry, High-performance liquid chromatography and GC in combination with Mass spectroscopy. This contribution provides a comprehensive review of its analytical and pharmacologic profile of codeine.
