HPLC Screening of Bioactives Compounds and Antioxidant Capacity of Different Hypericum Species

Thymus vulgaris essential oil is one of the most common oils used mainly in food industry but it could also have applications in medicine and pharmacy. The chemical composition of this essential oil depends on the plant material harvesting time, phenomenological stages, meteorological conditions and growing area of plants. In our study, four different Thymus vulgaris L. var. Donne Valley essential oils have been extracted and characterised. The essential oils have been extracted from plants before and after flowering in two different years. There is an important difference between the chemical composition of oils obtained from plants harvested before and after flowering. Thymol and carvacrol have been found as the major components, but the percentage depends on the phenological stages of the plants and the year of harvesting. Furthermore, the composition of the minor components changed.

Composition and Antioxidant Activity of Aqueous Extracts Obtained from Herb of Tansy (Tanacetum Vulgare L.)

The aim of this study was to determine the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of extracts obtained from herb of Tanacetum vulgare L. (tansy) harvested in two different locations from the western part of Romania. Aqueous extracts of tansy presented high antioxidant activity that ranged between 295.77 and 653.65 mg GAE/L, and remarkable percentage of inhibition (31.82-65.05 %). The compounds quantified in the plant extracts that were determined by UHPLC are: ascorbic acid, riboflavin, pyrocatechol, rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol. Extracts obtained from tansy flowers showed higher content of phenols compared to that obtained from leaves. Similarly, the flower extracts present a high antioxidant activity that could suggest their use as natural additives in food preservation and also in pharmaceutical industry and veterinary medicine.

Numerous plants are currently used for both their curative and preventive effects in a wide range of pathologies. They possess multiple beneficial effects, including the well-known antioxidant capacity. Agrimonia eupatoria L. and Filipendula spp., from the Rosaceae family have emerged as a potential source of phenolic constituents, showing antioxidant activities. The aim of this study was to obtain ethanolic extracts from Agrimonia eupatoria L., Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. and Filipendula vulgaris Moench. collected from the West part of Romania and to determine their antioxidant capacity. Two DPPH assays were used to determine the antioxidant activity of the extracts, ethanolic solution of 1 and 0.1 mM DPPH. Our data indicated that all the extracts, regardless of the place of harvest possess significant antioxidant activity. The most potent activity was recorded for the extracts prepared from Agrimonia eupatoria L. collected from Bazia� � Locva Mountains in mixture with ethanolic solution of 0.1 mM DPPH, followed by Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim, using the same concentration of ethanolic solution of standard antioxidant.
