“…In the first years of the consortium, the annual increase rate of full-text downloads and of participating members was about 75-80%, it but slowed to 15-20% in the last few years. These figures are comparable with usage statistics in the French consortium Couperin (Boukacem-Zeghmouri and Schöpfel, 2008) and with the NESLİ study (Bevan, Dalton and Conyers, 2005). In 2007, among the 86 ANKOS members, 46 institutions subscribed to 1-10 databases, 28 members to 11-20 databases, and 12 to more than 21 databases.…”

“…The low-use subscribed titles tend to cost much less than the high-use, non-subscribed titles, as has been found elsewhere. 2 Furthermore, such a policy would see us subscribing to few journals other than in medicine and the biological sciences!…”

“…The analysis of usage statistics shows a strong correlation between each institution's total usage and the usage in different subject collections with the research activity. A further detailed analysis of the usage statistics as reported in [6] and [7] combined with a cost benefit analysis can be used in new negotiations with the publishers and for developing national strategies in accessing scientific information. This will give an opportunity for each institution to evaluate the benefits of the "big deal" more realistically.…”
