How to Overcome Barriers for Wastewater Agricultural Reuse in Sicily (Italy)?

Abstract: This study reports an up-to-date summary of the principal barriers still limiting reclaimed water use for agriculture in Italy, and particularly in Sicily. Moreover, it provides a geographic informative system (GIS)-based procedure for evaluating the potential treated wastewater (TW) reuse in the Sicilian region as a decision support system for its management. The survey, based on possible economic, morphologic, and design solutions, evidenced a feasible integration of several wastewater treatment plants (WWTP… Show more

“…CWs are complex, integrated systems involving water, plants, animals, microorganisms, and the environment. They are used to improve the quality of point and nonpoint sources of water pollution, including municipal wastewater, urban stormwater, agricultural run-off, industrial wastewater, landfill leachate, and mine drainage [1], in which wastewater reuse also plays a crucial role [2].…”

“…As discussed in Section 1, the existence of social, technical, economic and regulatory barriers can hamper the widespread implementation of wastewater and sewage-sludge reuse. Concerning wastewater reuse, the most critical factor for the sustainability of the reclamation scheme is not the technology itself, but public acceptance [45,46]. Indeed, if on one hand there is good support of reclaimed wastewater for agriculture, public utilities and low-contact purposes, the majority of objections concern projects where humans may come in close contact with recycled water [14].…”

“…Similarly, principal barriers limiting the reclaimed water use for agriculture in Italy (particularly in Sicily) were analyzed by Ventura et al (2019), highlighting the complex and strict Italian legislations on the reuse of treated wastewater, and commenting that potential users should rely on the support of private or public agencies such as the Italian Irrigation Consortia.…”
