How to Identify Hot Topics in Psychology Using Topic Modeling

Abstract: Abstract. Latent topics and trends in psychological publications were examined to identify hotspots in psychology. Topic modeling was contrasted with a classification-based scientometric approach in order to demonstrate the benefits of the former. Specifically, the psychological publication output in the German-speaking countries containing German- and English-language publications from 1980 to 2016 documented in the PSYNDEX database was analyzed. Topic modeling based on latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) was a… Show more

“…Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Bittermann and Fischer (2018) studied the emergence of "hot topics" in psychology in German-speaking countries from 1980 to 2016. Based on 314, 573 English and German article abstracts listed in PSYNDEX and relying on the APA Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms, they investigated associations between topics uncovered and the terms provided by the thesaurus.…”

“…Therefore, our research focused on answering what research methods are being used, how these methods are being used and for what topics in practice (i.e., journal publications) in order to provide a general perspective of method used in psychology publication. We synthesised the collected data into the following format: research topic [areas of scientific discourse in a field or the current needs of a population (Bittermann and Fischer, 2018 )], method [data-gathering tools (Nieuwenhuis, 2016 )], sampling [elements chosen from a population to partake in research (Ritchie et al, 2009 )], data collection [techniques and research strategy (Maree, 2016 )], and data analysis [discovering information by examining bodies of data (Ktepi, 2016 )]. A systematised review of recent articles (2013 to 2017) collected from five different journals in the field of psychological research was conducted.…”

“…LDA differs from other clustering techniques as it produces a probabilistic assignment of keywords to topics and topics to documents. As a result, it reflects the nature of scientific publications more appropriately than dichotomized assignments (Bittermann & Fischer, 2018; Blei, 2012; Griffiths & Steyvers, 2004). To ensure the stability of the results, we followed the proposed procedure of Mantyla et al (2018), ran the LDA with multiple repetitions ( n = 100), and clustered the results with a k ‐medoids approach to identify distinct topic clusters.…”
