Crop losses from weeds worldwide average 10% annually. Herbicide application is almost essential in modern agriculture to maintain high productivity. Increased awareness of the environmental damage caused by continued use of conventional synthetic herbicides has aroused great interest in biodegradable, selective and environmentally friendly herbicides. The increasing incidence of herbicide resistance in weeds has stimulated research for herbicidal compounds with new or novel sites and modes of action. Microbial metabolites have become the focus of attention of researchers searching for natural product alternatives to conventional herbicides. Two well-known commercial herbicides of microbial origin are anisomycin (commercial analogue, methoxyphenon) and bialaphos. Both were isolated from members of actinomycetes. Several phytotoxins have been isolated from microbial metabolites, e.g., herbicidins A and B, herbimycins A and B, nigericin, tentoxin and others. The list of microbial phytotoxins continues to M. increase. Actinomycetes are the major source of several herbicides and other bioactive compounds. The potential of discovering new phytotoxins from metabolites of microorganisms is still unlimited. Methods of isolation of actinomycetes, their screening for phytotoxins, separation of phytotoxins from metabolites and partial purification of the toxins are described. Included are screening of soil fungi for phytotoxin, mass culture of fungi, and bioassays.

Phytotoxic compounds from plants and microorganisms represent a wide range of chemistries and mechanisms of action that have potential in the design and development of new herbicides. Although several natural products of higher plants have been patented as herbicides, none have been developed commercially. Many microbial products have been patented as herbicides and several have been or are being developed, including bialophos {L-2-amino-4-[(hydroxy)(methyl)phosphinoyl] -butyryl-L-alanyl-L-alanine} and glufosinate [L-2-amino-4-(hydroxyl)(methyl)(phosphinoyl)-butyric acid]. The new tools of molecular biology and biotechnology are making natural products more attractive alternatives in herbicide discovery programs.

서 론현재 널리 쓰이고 있는 유기합성 제초제는 인축에 대한 독성 및 토양 잔류로 인한 환경오염에 대한 우려가 있으나 천연물 제초제는 이러한 우려가 적다 (Sekizawa and Takematsu, 1982 ABSTRACT. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of herbicidin, new natural herbicidal substances, derived from soil actinomycetes Streptomyces scopuliridis. Several weed species were subjected to examine the germination inhibition and herbicidal activity at the concentration from 100 to 2,000 ppm. There was no selectivity in germination inhibition and herbicidal activity against crops. Germination of Echinochloa oryzoides, Digitaria ciliaris, Abutilon theophrasti and Amaranthus retroflexus was inhibited completely when 7.81 ppm of extract was treated in petri dish. Pre-emergence application of herbicidin in soil condition showed low inhibition against weeds. However, post application of herbicidin in green house resulted in the necrosis of weeds at the concentration of 2,000 ppm. A. retroflexus was sensitive to herbicidin at the low concentration of 62.5 ppm, whereas E. oryzoides was tolerant to lower concentration of herbicidin until it became withered at the concentration of 2,000 ppm. In conclusion, herbicidal substances derived from S. scopuliridis herbicidin, which is consisted with herbicidin A and B, have dominant effect on germination and growth inhibition. On the other hand, herbicidin was insufficient to control gramineous weeds. In future, it will be needed to develop the combination of herbicidin with other herbicide or compounds to control gramineous weeds as well.
