How the environment determines banking efficiency: a comparison of banking firms in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China

Abstract: This study uses the three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to explore the true managerial efficiency of the banking firms in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. The empirical results indicate that the environmental conditions have a significant impact on banking efficiency. When the country-specific situations are important factors in explaining efficiency difference, the common frontier estimates obtained by neglecting those factors can generate biased and overestimated inefficiency levels. With… Show more

“…The measurement of bank efficiency using nonparametric techniques such as data envelopment analysis (DEA) remains a topical issue in the literature (e.g., Ferrier and Lovell, 1990; Berg et al., 1991, 1993; Berger and Humphrey, 1992, 1997; Fukuyama and Weber 2009a, 2009b, 2010; Sufian, 2010; Holod and Lewis, 2011; Hemmati et al. 2013; Avkiran, 2015; Shyu et al., 2015; Wanke et al., 2016; Kweh et al., 2018; Nourani et al., 2019). For instance, Avkiran (2015) illustrates a dynamic network DEA in commercial banks operating in China.…”

“…Shyu et al. () investigate banking efficiency in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China; they conclude that environmental conditions have significant impact on efficiency measurement. There is some literature working on Chinese banking productivity; Kumbhakar and Wang () analyse the impact of banking reform on banking productivity and find that the productivity increases during 1993–2002.…”

“…DEA is a nonparametric method, which has been proved to be a powerful decision tool being widely used for evaluating the relative efficiency of decision‐making units (DMUs) in versatile applications (Saranga and Phani, ; Kounetas et al., ; de Figueiredo and Marca, ; Miranda et al., ; Chiu et al., ; Santín, ; Yadav et al., ; Shyu et al., ; Souza and Gomes, ; Gomes et al., ; Hoon et al., ; Moreno and Lozano, ; Tran and Villano, ). Building on the work of Farrell (), it was first generalized by Charnes et al.…”
