How the CYBATHLON Competition Has Advanced Assistive Technologies

Abstract: Approximately 1.1. billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, and assistive technology has the potential to increase their overall quality of life. However, the end users’ perspective and needs are often not sufficiently considered during the development of this technology, leading to frustration and nonuse of existing devices. Since its first competition in 2016, CYBATHLON has aimed to drive innovation in the field of assistive technology by motivating teams to involve end users more actively… Show more

“…This task focused primarily on training the full range of forearm pronation movement needed to completely empty the cup. To simulate activities of daily living in a pick and place scenario, the fourth scene reproduced the Clean Sweap task from the Cybathlon 2020 Global Edition [ 40 ] (Fig. 6 d).…”

“…Future work should also take into account the updated challenges for the 2024 Cybathlon event. The Cybathlon aims to progressively increase the level of functionality required or the devices participating in the different disciplines [6], and thus acts as a baseline for the development of such devices. The following lists focus areas that should be considered for improved performance at the 2024 Cybathlon [13]:…”

“…Each of these races test the ability of an operator and assistive device to complete a set of challenges which simulate real-life challenges faced by the disabled person. The Cybathlon thus provides a platform for the development of advanced assistive devices in a competitive environment with significant media attention [6]. The ARM race tests the ability of a pilot with a myoelectric or body-powered prosthetic arm to complete a range of everyday tasks such as hanging laundry, cutting bread, and opening a jar.…”

“…Although the main metric used for the Cybathlon competition is based on the time to complete the race, we aim to analyze the performance of each team using a standard clinical assessment. Earlier studies on Cybathlon offer valuable perspectives on the influential role of this event in advancing the field of assistive technology and research impact [ 10 , 11 ]. Additionally, regarding the Powered Arm Prostheses Race, the preparatory activities associated with the Cybathlon competition have promoted a human-centered design approach [ 12 , 13 ] and have facilitated an effective test bench for assessing system performance in real-world settings [ 14 ].…”
