How Power Influences Behavior in Projects: A Theory of Planned Behavior Perspective

Abstract: While the effect of power on organizations has been well researched, how power influences behavior in projects is less well understood. Taking a case-study approach and using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we traced the thoughts of project managers subject to power, particularly those who resisted. We discovered that power bore down on project managers through new injunctive norms, encouraging them either not to resist or eventually to compromise and yield to new norms that changed their experiential at… Show more

“…Importantly, by illuminating the effectiveness of inclusive leadership as a specific form of relational leadership in project-based environments, our study complements the extant relational leadership theory that has been predominately examined in the manufacturing, financial, and service industrial contexts (Javed et al, 2019; Ye et al, 2019). Therefore, the results of this study strengthen the theoretical underpinning and managerial implications of leadership processes in the project management domain from a behavioral perspective (Wynn et al, 2021).…”

“…Thus, future research could further refine the knowledge concerning project managers' competences and behaviors by comparing demographic differences (e.g., gender, age, working experience, etc.) (Ram and Ding, 2018), and exploring the relationship between project managers' competences and success in different contextual scenarios (e.g., cultures (Shao, 2018); power (Wynn et al, 2021)). Researchers highlighted the validity, reliability, and generalization of the identified results of project managers' competences in light of the limited sample sizes used (Ram and Ding, 2018;Ballesteros-Sanchez et al, 2019).…”
