How much orientation towards the host culture is healthy? Acculturation style as risk enhancement for depressive symptoms in immigrants

Abstract: The results suggest that even when undergoing extreme emotional distress, eventually leading to mental disorder, integration, as an acculturation style, seems to serve as a protective resource and possibly prevents further decline.

“…Age showed a significant association with any somatoform disorder/syndrome, which presumably corresponds to a general decrease in physical and mental health with increasing age or to a process of convergence with the health status of the host society as a result of acculturation [56]. In contrast to previous international and national findings, no significant correlations were found between the major disorder groups and (1) sociodemographic factors, namely, low educational level and low socioeconomic status due to unemployment and poverty [25, 26, 29, 5759] nor with (2) migration-related factors, i.e., nationality, generation and language at home, as possible parameters of acculturation [55, 60, 61]. Why language at home showed a correlation with the occurrence of any eating disorder remains unclear.…”

“…Acculturation is influenced by the interplay of exchanged information between the host culture and the immigrant, or heritage culture (Berry, 1997(Berry, , 2005(Berry, , 2006(Berry, , 2014. The cultural change that the group and the individuals in each group undergo is based on addressing two important aspects: 1) the value placed on maintaining one's ethnic culture; and, 2) the value placed on establishing and strengthening interethnic interactions with the larger society (Behrens et al, 2015;Berry, 1997Berry, , 2008Berry, , 2014Sam, Vedder, Liebkind, Neto, & Virta, 2008). The intersection of value placed on maintaining heritage by participating in the larger society results in a fourfold model of acculturation strategies.…”

“…Integration. Integration is the strategy characterized by individuals or groups who are interested in maintaining their cultural heritage while establishing interactions with the larger society (Behrens et al, 2015;Berry, 2001Berry, , 2005Berry, , 2014Paterson, 2008). Within integration, "some degree of cultural integrity is maintained, while at the same time immigrants seek, as a member of an ethno-cultural group, to participate as an integral part of the larger society" (Berry, 2005, p. 705).…”
