How Mesoscale Eddies Masquerade as Rossby Waves in Merged Altimetric Products

Abstract: The existence of Rossby waves is due to the latitudinal variation of planetary vorticity and was predicted by Carl-Gustaf Rossby in the 1930s (Dickinson, 1978.
