Exploring work-life balance among professional women in mainland China: A qualitative study

This article introduces a qualitative study utilizing semi-structured interviews to explore the barriers and resources of professional women to attain work-life balance (WLB) in the context of mainland China. Interviews were conducted with full-time employed women who had received higher education and possessed professional qualifications (N = 20). The findings reveal underlying factors in work and non-work domains which influence the achievement of work-life balance among Chinese professional women. Participants were found to perceive and attain their work-life balance differently according to their personal traits. The findings also highlight social and family support resources for Chinese professional women from the perspective of Confucianism. This study contributes to current knowledge on work and life issues through the lens of professional women's work-life balance perceptions and experiences in mainland China.

Human resource management (HRM) is underpinned by, and contributes to, the business ethics of the organization. Opportunities available to men and women as managers, and the role of managers more broadly, are critical in shaping business ethics in contemporary organizations. Research on women in management therefore provides an important lens through which to understand the institutional and cultural context of HR ethics as part of the business ethics of a country. To date, women in management in China remains an under-charted topic of research in the HRM field. Extant research and recommendations on the improvement of the position of women in management in China focus primarily on women themselves from a traditional, gender norm angle, instead of challenging the political and patriarchal system or any institutionalized discriminatory practice. This is, in part, due to the absence in China of a critical feminism approach or feminist movement, as found in Western societies, and the continuing strong influence of the state and media in portraying women's (stereotypical) image. There is significant room for research capacity building in scholarship on women in management research, for example, and through cross-fertilization of different disciplines and more rigorous research design and execution. This paper provides a critical analysis of extant literature on women in management and the ideologies underpinning it, and offers some suggestions for future research and conceptualization.

This paper is developed under the background of globalization and the development of the concept of workplace diversity. It is shown that workplace diversity has been beneficial for organizations’ development however it is a challenge for managers. For solving this problem, people started to focus on the issue of Diversity and Inclusion management. The management of diversity is a business technique used by firms to attract, maintain, and develop personnel from diverse backgrounds, and inclusion is a concept focused on employees‘ engagement. This article introduced organizational culture building, an invisible management method, which can create an invisible atmosphere that simulates the emergence of the developing goal, direction, and guiding concept, into the Diversity and Inclusion management process. It also brought up the opinion that the influencing mechanism between Diversity and Inclusion management and Organizational culture building is mutual, and especially focused on why and how to bring the idea of Diversity and Inclusion management into organizational culture development. It also provided several suggestions for companies to make the better implementation of this policy.
