How Do I Assess Tremor Using Novel Technology?

Abstract: Transducers are defined as any sensor that converts a physiological signal of tremor into an electrical signal. Evolving technologies have utilized transducers to develop devices for tremor measurement that are more convenient, accurate, and capable of continuous recording. Transducer‐based methods provide valuable diagnostic tools for the clinician that can distinguish between different tremor syndromes and differentiate tremor from other hyperkinetic movement disorders. Transducers are also used to objective… Show more

“…46 A decrease in tremor frequency after inertial loading is a specific finding 47 48 (see Longardner et al for an instructional video on how to conduct this test properly). 49 A higher frequency (>8 Hz) also points towards EPT. Finally, polymyography may be helpful when selecting appropriate muscles for botulinum toxin treatment in patients with (dystonic) tremor.…”

“…When performing this test, it is important to restrict motion to one joint to avoid confuscating wrist tremor with tremor from neighboring joints. A video of this method has been published [93].…”

“…Digitized amplitudes captured via inertial sensors correlate well with visual clinical rating scales of tremor severity, and are therefore inherently valid to quantify tremor severity [22]. Practical guidelines are available to the clinician how to deploy transducers in the assessment of tremor [23]. In addition to the objective quantification of tremor amplitudes as measure of severity, the neurophysiological assessment of tremor relies on transducers, and is a critical element in the differential diagnosis of tremor syndromes and hyperkinetic movement disorders that may mimic tremor [24].…”
