How are perceptions associated with water consumption in Canadian Inuit? A cross-sectional survey in Rigolet, Labrador

Abstract: Concerns regarding the safety and aesthetic qualities of one's municipal drinking water supply are important factors influencing drinking water perceptions and consumption patterns (i.e. sources used and daily volume of consumption). In northern Canada, Inuit communities face challenges with drinking water quality, and many Inuit have reported concerns regarding the safety of their drinking water. The objectives of this research were to describe perceptions of municipal tap water, examine use of water sources … Show more

“…Many Indigenous peoples continue to rely on traditional water sources, as they have for millennia [5,[7][8][9][10][16][17][18][19]. These sources vary between communities but tend to include "raw" or untreated water sources such as springs, creeks, and ponds throughout their traditional territories, which have been used for millennia.…”

“…Factors contributing to drinking water risk perception are complex and can vary considerably by community (de França Doria, 2010;Dupont et al, 2014;Spence & Walters, 2012). Characterization of drinking water risk perception could provide a better understanding of uncertainty associated with the amount of water consumed and risk of exposure (Chowdhury, Champagne, & McLellan, 2009;de França Doria, 2010;Wright et al, 2018). For example, Wright et al (2018) have explored perceptions associated with tap water consumption in Canadian Inuit communities.…”
