Ancient temple heritage space is a subcategory of integrated spaces with profound religious architecture, culture, and landscape. The temporal and spatial characteristics, spatial layouts, and functionalities of ancient temples are gradually transformed during different periods in their development. However, quantitative topological estimation tools, e.g., space syntax and detailed digital spatial models, have seldom been adopted in related studies on ancient temples. Daming Temple is a typical representative of the revitalization of Buddhism monastic building heritage in China. This research studies the spaces of Daming Temple, Yangzhou City, in three different periods and explores its spatio–temporal characteristics based on two space syntax models, i.e., the angle segment analysis (ASA) model and the visibility map analysis (VGA) model. By multi-step quantitative estimation, changes in the mean depth (MD), mean connectivity, and intelligibility of the temple have been observed. The global spatial structure is thoroughly revealed, which indicates the changes in the ‘temple-residence-garden’ inter-relationship. It is indicated that dynamic spatio–temporal characteristics of the temple have been undergoing changes chronically. Some phenomena are found to be effective in offering reasonable explanations for these changes, i.e., the changes in relationships among spaces, visitors’ pathfinding difficulties, and spatial design techniques. It also found that there are certain correlations between temporal–spatial changes and spatial conservation strategies for building heritages. The case study can provide some valuable references for the conservation, reactivation, and redesign of related historical and cultural building heritage in East Asia.

Traditional settlements are part of the urban context of every country, especially tourism-oriented cities such as Yogyakarta (Indonesia) and Kyoto (Japan). The design strategy and regulations have a more significant and complex portion involving cultural heritage buildings and settlement networks that shape the city's morphology. Pontocho and Kotagede are cultural areas with unique characteristics, such as the existence of narrow allies called Roji (in Japanese) and 'Jalan rukunan'. This research aims to understand the role of alleyways between two traditional settlements that form urban identities. The descriptive-qualitative research method uses depth map software to display the observed area coverage through connectivity and visibility. The results found in this research can manifest both locations' characters in a tangible and intangible aspect. The existence of a historic alley that forms the morphology of historic settlements will keep its existence considered because it is a continuity network that creates a serial vision for observers, tourists, and also the local community. Spatial dialogue studies through serial vision theory in historic alleys are expected to provide renewal to considerations of revitalizing heritage settlements, especially in Asian countries.

Lorong, halaman dan rumah yang berada di Kampung-kampung Kotagede saling berkaitan dan terhubung dengan pola teritorialitas. Namun akibatnya sering terjadinya tumpang tindih ketika personal space menjadi communal space. Selain itu, terjadinya perubahan sosial dengan adanya kunjungan wisatawan ke Kotagede mengakibatkan adanya perubahan perilaku yang berkaitan dengan gaya hidup masyarakat Kotagede. Interaksi masyarakat Kotagede antara penghuni sebagai pemilik yang melakukan interaksi dengan tamu ataupun wisatawan menghadirkan pola teritorialitas yang unik untuk dikaji lebih lanjut. Satu cara untuk mengkaji adalah menggunakan metode space syntax. Namun dalam penggunaan metode space syntax perlu diuji sehingga dapat menghasilkan kajian yang mendalam, yang mana analisa space syntax terbatas oleh sosial dan konfigurasi ruang, tidak pada interaksi yang terjadi di Kotagede. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan jawaban berupa terujinya relavansi metode space syntax untuk mengkaji aspek teritorialitas di Kotagede berdasarkan rumusan state of the art. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kepustakaan dengan mencari penelitian terdahulu berkaitan dengan Kotagede, teritorialitas dan space syntax dengan dua teknik pengolahan data berupa teknik dokumentasi dan konten analisi. Hasil kajian menemukan, metode space syntax relevan untuk digunakan mengkaji pola teritorialitas di Kotagede namun memerlukan pendekatan pendamping agar mampu menjawab secara komprehensif.
