Households' perception of climate change and human health risks: A community perspective

Abstract: BackgroundBangladesh has been identified as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world concerning the adverse effects of climate change (CC). However, little is known about the perception of CC from the community, which is important for developing adaptation strategies.MethodsThe study was a cross-sectional survey of respondents from two villages--one from the northern part and the other from the southern part of Bangladesh. A total of 450 households were selected randomly through multistage sampling co… Show more

“…Indeed, female-headed households are marginally more vulnerable than male-headed households [21]. These results are in line with the findings of Haque et al and Kartiki [22,23] in Bangladesh, who found that female-headed households are less resilient. However, Demetriates and Esplen and Below et al [24,25] have showed the contrary in sub-Saharan African contexts.…”

“…Haque et al [9] found that majority of the participants (95%) in Bangladesh have reported that temperature during summer months has increased, while 80.2% participants reported that the rainfall has decreased. They also perceived that climate variability was negatively affecting the agriculture, human health and livelihoods as a whole.…”

“…Several studies showed that children are worst victim of climate change [11] [12]. Some studies has been carried out both in developed and developing countries to understand the perceptions on the effects of climate change on health among communities [13]- [22]. Toan et al, [23] found in Hanoi that most people had clear perception about climate change and its impact on health.…”

“…Toan et al, [23] found in Hanoi that most people had clear perception about climate change and its impact on health. People perceived that health problems usually increase during summer, monsoon and winter season [13] [23] [24]. Other studies reported different categories of health outcomes that are most likely to be affected by environmental change: temperature related health problems; health effects from extreme weather events; air-water related health effects and food and vector borne diseases [25]- [28].…”
