Access to health and availability of sanitary resources is a major deterrent to mobility and treatment in sub-Saharan African towns. If it is not a problem of distance, perhaps it will be that of existing health infrastructure and know-how. This article posits that the incongruence in the availability of health units and unsatisfactory alertness has affected care in the West Region. A physical-access-ratio analysis was done to determine the distance between the health resources and population through a GPS and WGS 84 for the presentation of results. Some 120 questionnaires were administered to patients and health personnel to have first-hand information on the ratio and health need of the area. Results from findings divulge an unequal distribution of health units in the West with 51.3% concentrated in five districts and 48.7% in fifteen. The ratio of population to available health unit is 2,543 inhabitants per unit which is commendable to the WHO 10,000 inhabitants per unit standard. Unfortunately this ratio is unevenly distributed within the region as districts with a high prevalence level of diseases possess less health units. The region is 78.6% accessible in the distance of households to health unit of 5km maximum of WHO standard with 21.4% of some areas at 20km away. With an uneven distribution of inhabitants to health personnel in the region, there is a need to re-adjust the ratio. This paper advocates for a health unit and resources map to facilitate mobility and reduce health discrepancies at best in the area.

Despite its simple and perceived affordable prevention methods, malaria has over time remained the main killer disease in Africa, Sub Sahara Africa, Cameroon and the North West Region in Particular. It is from the above backdrop that this study uses quantitative approach to examine the socioeconomic determinants of malaria prevention options adoption by households in the North West Region of Cameroon. Thus, data was collected from 400 households purposively selected among the top ten health districts with high prevalence of malaria in the North West Region of Cameroon. The study used both Ordinary Least Square, Poisson and Ordered Logit Regression techniques to capture the socioeconomic determinants of malaria prevention behaviour of households. These different methodologies were used to check the robustness of the results as methodology changes. The findings reveal that community based malaria prevalence, knowledge of malaria signs, knowledge of malaria cause, age of household heads, marital status of household heads, household size, cost of malaria prevention, household monthly income, education and employment status of the household head are all socioeconomic factors that determine malaria prevention options adopted by households in the North West Region. Based on the findings, the study strongly recommends further sensitization campaigns; creation of community-based malaria control committees; sponsored media programs; household empowerment programs, free distribution of Insecticide Treated Bed Nets, the use of holistic rather than individualistic malaria prevention strategies, among others as specific policy measures that can health achieve the much desired goal of eradicating malaria in the North West Region and Cameroon as a whole.

Since independence, the “Anglophone” and “Francophone” identities (both legacies of British and French colonialism, respectively) have remained the dominant national identity of Cameroonians. This linguistic national identity was formalized by the adoption of bilingualism at the dawn of independence and the enactment of English and French as the two official languages of the country. Nationalism and national integration in the Cameroonian context therefore revolve around the cohabitation of the aforementioned distinct linguistic and cultural identities, which harbors significant incompatibilities. This article probes into the effectiveness of the cohabitation model of nation-building in Cameroon and attempts a new alternative. A survey was conducted to sample the opinion of Cameroonians on national identity and nationalism in Cameroon. The results indicate there are enormous challenges with the implementation of the cohabitation model, which an overwhelming majority of respondent believe has a negative impact on national integration. A new approach dubbed “Civic-multicultural model” is proposed. This model is based on the “Kamerun Idea,” which is a glaring reminder that before being “anglicized” by the British on the one side of the Mungo river, and “gallicized” by the French on the other side, the inhabitants offshore the “Rios dos Cameroes” were first “kamerunized” by the Germans.
