Horizontal Acoustic Barriers for Protection from Seismic Waves

Abstract: The basic idea of a seismic barrier is to protect an area occupied by a building or a group of buildings from seismic waves. Depending on nature of seismic waves that are most probable in a specific region, different kinds of seismic barriers can be suggested. Herein, we consider a kind of a seismic barrier that represents a relatively thin surface layer that prevents surface seismic waves from propagating. The ideas for these barriers are based on one Chadwick's result concerning nonpropagation condition for … Show more

“…Studies [10] on the design models of the «structure-base» system for seismic effects have shown the effectiveness of the damping layers as wave reflectors in the ground mass, at the boundary of materials with different properties. The proposed mathematical model is based on the theory of P. Chadwick where Rayleigh waves cannot propagate if the surface of the half-space is pinched.…”

“…In this paper, based on the previous work (Dou, 2002;Kuznetsov, et al, 2011), it is demonstrated that the stability of plane-parallel flows of an ordinary liquid can be naturally translated into the language of the theory of hydrodynamic resonances.…”

“…Recently, (Dou, 2002;Kuznetsov, et al, 2011) proposed a new mechanism for flow instability and turbulent transition in parallel shear flows. In this paper, based on the previous work (Dou, 2002;Kuznetsov, et al, 2011), it is demonstrated that the stability of plane-parallel flows of an ordinary liquid can be naturally translated into the language of the theory of hydrodynamic resonances.…”

“…Метод конечных элементов (МКЭ) является эффективным способом решения задач дифракции волн в различных средах. Применения КЭ моделирования к учету диссипации энергии в конструкциях, к наложению неотражающих граничных условий, к моделированию сейсмических источников и к сейсмической защите рассмотрены в работах [3] и [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”
