Hookworm Anemia: Iron Metabolism and Erythrokinetics

Abstract: Iron metabolism, balance of red cell production and destruction and iron absorption from hemoglobin were determined in 11 patients with heavy hookworm infection and severe anemia. The plasma iron, total iron binding capacity, bone marrow hemosiderin and plasma Fe59 clearance are in agreement with the idea that the anemia associated with hookworm infection is of the iron deficiency type. The rate of red cell production measured by the E/M ratio, absolute reticulocyte count and plas… Show more

“…The worm gets entry into the pups through trans-mammary route (Miller, 1965) or into the adults through skin penetration. Ancylostomiasis causes severe haemorrhagic gastroenteritis leading to severe iron de cient microcytic hypochromic anaemia (Layrisse, 1961). The adult worms attach to and feed on the intestinal mucosa causing intestinal haemorrhages (Georgi, 1968), presence of blood in faecal matter, severe anaemia and intestinal ulceration.…”
