Hongeo, a new skate genus (Chondrichthyes: Rajidae), with redescription of the type species

Abstract: Hongeo gen. nov. is proposed following examinations of several individuals, including adult males, of the type species Raja koreana, previously described from a single adult female specimen from the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. A number of external (including claspers, squamation, and ampullary and lateral line canal systems) and skeletal characters are newly described. The phylogenetic position of R. koreana among 26 nominal rajid supraspecific taxa plus 2 unnamed supraspecific taxa of Rajidae and … Show more

“…(1994, 1995, 1996) and skeletal features provided by Aschliman et al. (2012a) and Jeong & Nakabo (2009), which are useful to better define the synapomorphies that distinguish skates from other batoids. The original detailed data matrix of McEachran & Dunn (1998, appendix 3) has been checked and the taxonomic status of the species updated according to the recent classification of Last et al.…”

“…) is the high‐resolution molecular phylogeny constructed by Aschliman (), shown to be the best explanation of current data (Aschliman et al, ). Where our data included taxa that were not part of this phylogeny, genera were added with intergeneric relationships determined through the published literature (McEachran and Dunn, ; Last and Yearsley, ; Last, ; Last and McEachran, ; Jeong and Nakabo, ). Where conflicts existed, or insufficient data were available, we assumed soft polytomies.…”

“…There are approximately 30 genera with about 190 species, 15 of which have been reported from Atlantic Canadian waters (Scott & Scott 1988). Classifications for skate subgenera and genera have been proposed by a number of authors (see Jeong & Nakabo 2009), and it is estimated that approximately 50 known species still remain undescribed (cf. Last & Stevens 1994; Nelson 1994; McEachran & Dunn 1998).…”
