Homoegonol attenuates the asthmatic responses induced by ovalbumin challenge

Abstract: Homoegonol is a lignan derived from styraxlignolide A, which was isolated from Styrax japonica, a medicinal plant widely used for treatment of inflammatory diseases in Korea. We investigated the efficacy of homoegonol for the treatment of allergic asthma using an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine asthma model. The mice were sensitized through intraperitoneal injections of OVA on days 0 and 14. On days 21, 22 and 23 after the initial OVA sensitization, the mice were received OVA airway challenge. Homoegonol was ad… Show more

“…Breast cell invasion is associated with enhanced expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 [15][16][17][18]. Expression of MMP-9 is induced under various physiological conditions such as wound healing, inflammation, tumor invasion and metastasis [19,20]. Elevated expression of MMP-9 is associated with poor prognosis in several cancers including breast cancer [21][22][23].…”

“…iNOS is associated with the initiation and aggravation of airway inflammation via the elevation of nitric oxide production in CS induced airway inflammation [1028]. This signaling was observed in COPD clinical trials.…”

“…ERK pathway is activated by various stimuli and CS is a powerful stimulus for ERK activation [10]. During the development of COPD, ERK activation produced pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which aggravates airway inflammation and destroy normal alveolar structure [111213].…”

“…Asthma is a chronic and acute respiratory disease of the airways [1] which has been identified by various properties such as the increased responsiveness of airways to physical and chemical stimuli [2] . In asthma, the responses of the immune system and related cells including T lymphocytes are influenced.…”
