Homocysteine as a prognostic marker of atrial remodeling and clinical picture in patients with paroxysmal and persistent forms of atrial fibrillation

Abstract: The aim of this work was to study prognostic significance of the relationship between the homocysteine level, structural/ functional atrial remodeling, and clinical picture of paroxysmal and persistent forms of atrial fibrillation (AF). The study included 75 patients with AF concomitant with coronary heart disease and hypertensive disease without apparent structural changes in myocardium. Group 1 was comprised of 48 patients with paroxysmal AF, group 2 of 27patients with persistent AF. 19 patients with coronar… Show more

“…However, only several studies have addressed the association between Hcy and AF risk ( Schnabel et al, 2010 ). Although these studies have reported an association of elevated plasma Hcy levels with increased AF risk, it is difficult to distinguish causal association from spurious association in observational studies ( Snezhitsky et al, 2016 ; Wei et al, 2017 ; Yao et al, 2017a ). Further studies are warranted to clarify the causative relationship between Hcy and AF.…”
