Homocysteine and nitric oxide levels in plasma of patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, and primary open-angle glaucoma

Abstract: Elevated levels of homocysteine in pseudoexfoliation patients with and without glaucoma may partly explain the increased risk of vascular disease among patients with pseudoexfoliation. No significant difference was found in plasma NO markers among the POAG, PXS, PXG, and the control subjects.

“…Given the sample size calculations already mentioned, it seems hardly www.intechopen.com surprising some studies have had a negative outcome. In this respect, it is interesting to note that 3 of 5 studies reporting no significant association actually demonstrated small 78 or considerable 74,81 differences in plasma homocysteine between POAG and control. This is confounded by large variance in the population (as shown by standard deviation) and high mean plasma homocysteine in controls.…”

“…Structural vascular abnormalities documented in eyes with exfoliation syndrome could be involved [76][77][78]. Hyperhomocysteinemia which is a major risk factor for vascular diseases, including venous thrombosis, was reported to be more common in exfoliation syndrome and exfoliation OAG patients than in healthy controls in several studies [79][80][81][82].…”
