Homeopathy in acute otitis media in children: treatment effect or spontaneous resolution?

Abstract: The conventional antibiotic treatment of acute otitis media (AOM) faces a number of problems, including antibiotic resistance. Homeopathy has been shown to be capable of treating AOM successfully. As AOM has a high rate of spontaneous resolution, a trial to prove any treatment-effect has to demonstrate very fast resolution of symptoms. The purpose of this study was to find out how many children with AOM are relieved of pain within 12 h after the beginning of homeopathic treatment, making additional measures un… Show more

“…However, this study was not designed as an equivalence study, and it has simply failed to detect a significant difference between the two treatments. Also, there is no statistical power calculation reported; the authors refer to a previous pilot study for justification, but this indicated a sample size of 270, not 81 as in the present study. The authors also describe their own study as a pilot, but they do not qualify their conclusions as such.…”

“…Consumption of conventional medicines was registered as secondary outcome variable in some studies. Friese et al [70] and Frei [61] could detect a plain reduction of antibiotics in each case of the homeopathic treatment group. In studies by Eizayaga et al [63] and Matusiewicz and Rokiewicz-Piorun [85], additional homeopathic treatment for corticosteroid-dependent asthma led to a reduction in the use of conventional med- Effectiveness, Safety and Cost-Effectiveness of Homeopathy icines.…”
