Homemade Kefir Consumption Improves Skin Condition—A Study Conducted in Healthy and Atopic Volunteers

Abstract: Diet has a fundamental role in the homeostasis of bodily functions, including the skin, which, as an essential protective barrier, plays a crucial role in this balance. The skin and intestine appear to share a series of indirect metabolic pathways, in a dual relationship known as the “gut-skin axis”. Hence, the gut-skin axis might be receptive to modulation via dietary modification, where probiotics can be included, thus representing a potential therapeutic target in inflammatory skin diseases, such as atopic … Show more

“…Finally, in humans, an improvement in clinical symptoms in children and adults with AD has been reported [ 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 ]. The ingestion of probiotics from Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species is associated with a reduction in AD severity and TEWL, as well as an improvement in skin hydration [ 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 ].…”

“…Finally, in humans, an improvement in clinical symptoms in children and adults with AD has been reported [ 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 ]. The ingestion of probiotics from Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species is associated with a reduction in AD severity and TEWL, as well as an improvement in skin hydration [ 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 ]. These studies report that this improvement is related to the modulation of the GM to favor tryptophan metabolism, the reduction in microbial translocation, the increase in Treg and Th1 lymphocytes, and the decrease in Th2 lymphocytes, IgE, and proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF, TSLP and the chemokine CCL17 [ 156 , 158 , 159 , 160 ].…”

“…This dairy beverage also improves non-alcoholic fatty liver syndrome [ 25 , 26 ], and its cell-free fraction induces apoptosis of gastric and colorectal cancer cells [ 27 , 28 ]. Outside the gastrointestinal tract, kefir has shown an anti-inflammatory effect [ 29 ], wound-healing properties [ 30 ], as well as the ability to improve atopic dermatitis [ 31 ].…”
